8.2 Earthquake Strikes in Northern Chili

An 8.2 earthquake struck off the coast of Iquique on April 1st at 8:47 pm local time 59 miles off of the coast.  Deaths caused by the quake total six.  Tsunami alerts were issued shortly after the quake and evacuations ordered as dozens of aftershocks were reported including a 6.2 magnitude aftershock.  Over 900,000 people are belong allowed to return to their homes after the last of these alerts have been cancelled.

The quake triggered one fire and several landslides in the area, and disrupted electricity.  Shortly after the earthquake, over 300 inmates escaped from a women’s prison in Iquique.
