Taliban Suicide Attackers Storm Police Station in Jalalabad

A police station in Jalalabad, Afghanistan was targeted by militants in a gun battle and bomb assault that went on for over three hours and killed ten policeman and a university student who was caught in the crossfire.

A mini-truck driven by a suicide bomber was detonated outside the police station.  In the debris and confusion, several gunmen (all wearing suicide vests) attacked the station as two additional bombs were set off remotely.  At least twenty people were injured from the initial explosion.  The Taliban claimed responsibility for this latest attack leading up to Afghanistan elections on April 5th.

Suicide Bomber Strikes Hotel in Somalia

Date of Occurrence: March 17, 2014 Location: Buuloburde, Somalia Event: Suicide Bomb at checkpoint Fatalities: 32 reported Injuries/Displaced: Unknown

A suicide bomber drove a car bomb into a hotel that houses African Union and Somali troops on Monday. The attack was followed by heavy fighting.  The number of fatalities and injured is unknown at this point.  The attack follows a different attack on a military convoy also on Monday that claimed the lives of four Somali soldiers.

Impounded Car in Kenya Contained Large Amounts of Explosives

Date of Occurrence: March 19, 2014 Location: Mombasa, Kenya Event: Explosive-Laden Vehicle Found Fatalities: 0 Injuries/Displaced: 0

Following the see-something/say something rule, a group of foreign counterterrorism officials recognized an impounded vehicle in Kenya that was on an international alert list.  Further investigation revealed the vehicle contained over 130 lbs of plastic explosive in the form of six pipe bombs welded into the vehicle’s rear seats.  An AK-47, grenades and ammunition were also found in the vehicle.  The Somali driver of the vehicle and a Kenyan passenger of Somali origin were arrested the previous week for illegally importing a car into Kenya.
