January 25, 2013 NEWS: Death Toll in Mozambique Flood Still Expected to Rise

Summary:
On Thursday, the death toll from flooding in Mozambique has risen to 12 and is expected to increase in the coming days.  The flood continues to affect a  majority of southern Mozambique, where the electricity has been shut down.  70,000 people were forced to evacuate from their shelters and seek temporary refuge in different evacuation centers.  The heavy rains are expected to last until Tuesday of next week.

January 25, 2013 NEWS: Five Dead in Car Bomb Attack in Kapisa

Summary:
The Taliban was behind a car bomb attack in Kapisa, Afghanistan on Friday morning in which five people died. The attack was aimed at a NATO convoy but did not harm any members from NATO.

Suicide Bomber Kills Prominent Iraqi Lawmaker

Summary:
Iraqi lawmaker, Ayfan Sadoon al-Essawi, was killed by a suicide bomber disguised as a worker at a construction site.  Two of his bodyguards were also killed and four more were wounded.

Twin Blasts in Aleppo University Kills 82

Summary:
The first day of exams in the University of Aleppo had to be moved due to two explosions.  The blasts which killed 82 and critically wounding at least 160 happened in close proximity to the university dormitories and the architecture building. The victims were mostly students and civilians who were being housed in the university.   No cause is known and no direct party has confirmed responsibility over the incident.

Double Bombings in Syria Kills At Least 34

Summary:
Early morning Wednesday, 34 people were killed when two car bombs detonated in Jaramana, Damascus. Dozens were also wounded from the incident. The explosives detonated in a parking lot between two commercial buildings five minutes apart.  There have been already been numerous bombing attacks in the area for the past few months.

Indonesia Shakes To A 5.5 Earthquake, No Immediate Damages Reported

Summary:
Eastern Indonesia was struck with a 5.5 earthquake on Wednesday, per the U.S. Geological Survey. The earthquake was centered 35 miles under the ocean. No damages were reported and no alarms were set off for any tsunami alerts.

November 23, 2012 NEWS: Suicide Bombing in Wardack Province Kills 2 and Wounds 60

Summary:
A vehicle bomb was set off by 2 suicide bombers at 7:30am in a street in Wardack, Afghanistan killing two and wounding at least 60.  A representative from the Taliban, says they were behind the incident and that this was their reaction to the latest capital punishment of four Taliban detained in the Afghan main detention center in Kabul.

November 21, 2012 NEWS: Suicide Bomber Detonates Explosives Near US Embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan

Summary:
A suicide bomber disguised as a security guard was killed before entering the premises of a US military base in Kabul. The explosives he was carrying detonated however it was unclear if the shooting of the guard or if the bomber himself ignited the devices. Three died and three more were injured in the incident that happened on Wednesday at around 8 in the morning. The area where the incident took place is where international organizations, diplomats and senior government officials are located.

November 19, 2012 NEWS: Slum Fire in Bangladesh Causes 11 Deaths

Summary:
A mosquito coil (here is a link to Wikipedia for those who are not familiar with mosquito coil) set fire to buildings in a slum of Hazaribagh, Dhaka, Bangladesh at 3am on Monday.   The fire rapidly spread, and killed 11 people.   Although firefighters arrived at the area within a matter of minutes, they had a hard time putting it out.   In the end, more than 500 homes were damaged.

November 14, 2012    NEWS: Chain of Car Bombs Attack in Iraq, 18 Killed, 80 Wounded

Summary:
A chain of car bombS exploded across Iraq on Wednesday, a day before the beginning of the Islamic New Year. Overall, 18 people died and at least 80 were wounded. The explosions occurred in:

  • Hafriya where three were killed, 18 wounded;
  • Central Baghdad where one was killed and dozens wounded;
  • Kirkuk, which was the deadliest attack. where five were killed and 31 wounded;
  • Hilla where five died and 12 injured; and
  • Diyala Province –  which targeted the convoy of Governor Omer Aziz al-Hamri. The governor was unharmed but 11 were wounded.
