A suicide bomber in a rickshaw struck near a checkpoint leading to a Afghan government in Maymana, the capital of Faryab province in northern Afghanistan.  Sixteen civilians were killed and at least forty-six people were injured in an explosion roughly 200 meters from the governor’s compound.  Victims included women and children in a nearby bazaar.

The Taliban’s attacks have been increasing with the intent of  disrupting an April 5th vote to choose a new president for the country.  Last year, 2,959 civilians were killed and 5,656 were wounded as a result of insurgents battling Afghan and international troops.
